How to disassemble the front cardan on a 10.4?

Post by jumabago »

Here you can see a graphic that's close to the front cardan on my 10.4 (it's the closest one on the disassembly manuals).
Except on my aro, the u-joints can't be taken apart. I mean, they can be, but I would have to hammer like crazy, and I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be good for the gear box and the front differential ;D .
Plus I can't remember the u-joint size right now, but I do know that they can't be found here in Argentina. So, If I brake one, I would have to modify the cardan.
The problem is the yokes that go on the gear box and the front differential are a little loose (you can push them with your hand and they go up and down 1 mm or so) and I want to get that cardan off there so I can take a look.
So far, the cardan especialist and a mechanic, both think that you have to move the whole front differential in order to get it out... could that really be true?!
We've tried everything, pushing on the male/female part of the cardan to see if we can compress it, gently trying to dismantle the u-joint... but nothing has worked... any suggestions? please help!

how is the front differential mounted? it chan be mounted on the ghear box clutch cover (under , in 4 x M10 Bolts), or lower rail ( chasii union connecting rails- in 2 pice brachets with M8 -M10 bolts- diff case bolts) , in other words, the front differential must be remowed- ore moweed somehaw, in front of the car, 5 cm , i'ts a bit dodgy , the front weel transmision shafts cheeps the dif. in place,
i'ts true,
when you disasemby the" front proper shaft', the articulated + joints, have 4 caps needel beerings, ar holded in place by 4 steel clips, cliips must bee removed, end then the beering must be depreest somehaw (are tite fit)-downt use the hammer becouse you will dammege the U pices bee weerry charefoul or you will bend them.

a experienced mecaniic chan replace the articulated conexion part + with needel bering caps - you chan find them at beering store , they will mesure the worn + part

you have more shematic asemblly pictures of the aro 10 car? wee have some, butt nott all of them, includding this one

thanks,
Now I know for sure that the front differential has to be moved in order to change the U-joints.
I'm not sure how it's mounted though, I'll take a look at that when I can.
With regards to the schematics you are refering to, I thought everybody had these.
There's an argentinian site with some, here's the link for the 10.4:
http://www.oocities.org/ar/arojungletou ... spiece.htm
(the site is in spanish, but the schematics are in english)
and here's the link for the 244:

I hope that helps.

Cheers!
